Hong Kong - Fatty Crab 肥蟹

Malaysian inspired cuisine cooked up by a bunch of New Yorkers.  Hmm....  I had to think about that one for a bit.  I don't even eat Singapore/Malaysian food in Hong Kong since I get home quite a bit and don't get into crazy cravings.  So would I take the chance of a no-reservations place on a Friday night in Central for Malaysian food literally cooked up by New Yorkers (I didn't spot an Asian from the sliver opening of the kitchen door closest to our table).  Seriously.

No one spoke Chinese in the joint.  I don't even think they spoke English.  It was as Nu Yawk as the Statue of Liberty.  And it was Greenwich village vibe cool.  Good music and a wide array of fun cocktails.  They can do mock on request.  Definitely noisy and the acoustics amplified it.

And the food?

Like a lot of places these days which tout sharing so everyone gets a taste of everything, we were advised on picking from the different sections in the menu - raw, skinny and fatty.  They also have sides like in good ole fashioned America.  Since there were only 2 of us, we skipped to the chase and and had 3 fattys!

Watermelon Pickle and Crispy Pork
This was as good a pork as you can get anywhere, even in Hong Kong, where pork is the territory's meat of choice.  Pork is very much in our blood and we can have it in several courses of a meal.  But I digress.  This was perfectly crisp on the outside so it envelopes a melt-in-the-mouth combo of fat and flesh.  The watermelon was split into 2 categories.  The red sweet and juicy part we are all used to consuming especially in the thick of summer.  Then they pickled the pale green section between the red and the skin.  With a really really tart dressing reminiscent of the pickle dishes which many old school Chinese restaurants still serve, only much tarter.  There was also a lot of herb varieties over the top which reminded me of many-a-dish in Vietnam where herbs are the order of the day.  Nice, fresh and light for something from the Fatty section, but personally, I could do with just the out-of-the-world pork and fresh watermelon cubes.

Nasi Lemak
This was a 50/50 order since there isn't much you can do to justify badly executed nasi lemak.  But you know what?  It was good it its own right.  Not quite what you're used to on the streets of KL or even from a hawker center in Singapore, but this was nasi lemak at a finer level.  The piece de resistance was a very good piece of curry chicken leg which took center stage.  This dish could have been called curry chicken rice and still be great.  A slow poached egg when broken, added to the richness of the gravy.  Bliss.  Snags?  Sambal had too much heat and not sweet enough.  I would also have like a lot more ikan bilis but that's just me.

Chilli Crab
This scored points with me for the use of Dungeness crab, which I love.  And surprisingly, a really good Pullman toast which had chew to it.  The gravy was not the kind I'm used to although it went well with the toast.  This was not the eggy gravy with a tomato base but rather had a lot more sambal in the base and more pungent.  Wasn't bad though.

Peanut Butter kinda dessert
Perhaps the one disappointment was dessert.  We should have stuck on theme but got distracted as we would by anything with peanut butter in it.  Well, this dish probably suffered more from the choice of a jam jar as a serving platform since it was hard to get a little bit of everything making every spoonful messy and one-dimensional.  I also dislike whipped cream so it made it worse.  On a flatter dish, this would have been way more enjoyable.

Overall, lotsa fun and good quality food (just don't think of it as a Malaysian experience).  It's a theme restaurant for crying out loud.  And you do have to, to be heard over the noise, and to get past the only broken link in communication who stands out front waiting to receive guests.  Her aside, it's good service all round without the service charge.  Yes, tipping is "discretionary" (just like in America).

Singapore - DB Bistro Moderne

Ladies who lunch are fab.  It's been so busy that I've forgotten how to enjoy a leisurely lunch.  And so on the eve of a holiday, it doesn't get better.

Daniel Boulud, one of the celebrity chefs who've set up shop in Singapore, has his bistro in the newish Sands integrated resort down in Marina Bay.  It's a comfortable place to dine in, with warm lighting, dark wood interiors, reminiscent of a old-style Parisian bistro but with modern fittings.

I ordered a home-made lemonade, which was overly sweet.  And cloyingly so.  I don't know why I didn't send it back since it was almost like drinking undiluted cordial.  Must have been the holiday mood..

Bread Basket
No complaints with the bread basket, which eased the hunger pangs of a late lunch.  Soft, with a nice chewy texture.  If only they used better butter..

Tarte Fine Provencal
I wasn't quite sure about this one.  My favorite bit was the smoked Mozarella melted over the top.  The chewiness of the cheese allowed the savory smokiness to linger and bring what was otherwise lacking in flavor to the tart.  The chopped up tomato and eggplant under the cheese was ratatouille like and while you could tell the 2 ingredients, didn't taste of much more.  Maybe it's just me, but the combination of the 2 just wasn't enough.  The squirt tail of Sauce Vierge on the side didn't add anything either.  Pleasant enough but very person-next-door.  Wouldn't order it again.

The Frenchie Burger
The burger on the other hand was total Yums.  A good quality beef patty topped with a confit pork belly (like bacon but thicker and better)!  The other condiments of caramelised onions, Morbier cheese (a French Mozarella) and cornichons added to the experience but did not distract.  It was really about the 2 meats.  I was a little apprehensive about the black pepper bun at first but happy it did not add too much spice.  And of course the fries were nothing short of good.  Even towards the end of the meal, they retained their crispiness and were extremely full flavored.  Probably deep fried in fat, but that's how you get that quality, so really can't argue with that.

Gourmet burgers are the way to go here so next time I want my fix, I know where to go.  Will I be a lady who lunches again soon enough?

Los Angeles - Petros Greek Cuisine and Lounge

I'm not a huge fan of Greek food but game enough to try it and hoping I would be pleasantly surprised on a fine Californian sunshine day. And if you're hosted by an entertainment lawyer from LA, you know she knows the scene (even if she's being humble!).

Petros was indeed a pleasant surprise! Set right in the Manhattan Beach Village, very cool and on a Friday afternoon, the patio was filled with all types of ladies who lunch - corporate types, dress down Friday types, gym types, biking types, yoga types... you get the picture.

The lunch menu is almost made for these women and why not? Refreshing salad combinations, couple of soups, and entrees which are yummy but don't start your weekend on a draggy note.

C had the Karpouzi salad - frsh watermelon, heirloom tomatoes, Epirus feta, manouri cheese, generously drizzled with Greek honey and mint. Sweet but not cloying, freshly tart but not sour, bound together with all the yummy dairy and honey from Greece, you feel your eyes perk up as you tuck into every mouthful, made different depending on what your fork picks up.
I loved my Gyro Giaourti - grilled gyro slices, with homemade Greek yoghurt, red onion, tomatoes and perfect shoestring fries (and mind you - this ain't a burger joint). The Greek burger which didn't make me feel guilty and became my energy for the Friday workout to come!

Highly recommended by others and now I see why. I just might change my mind about Greek food, we shall see.

Los Angeles - Joe's Restaurant

2 weeks in a new job and life is no longer normal. Jetlagged, tired with not much of an appetite but with some great company and a fabulously casual Californian joint with very decent food, things could change. Named after Joe Miller, an unassuming nice guy chef who's done the time at other great US fine dining establishments, Joe's has been in business since 1991, which speaks volumes for the fickle and trendy LA crowd.

The tasting menu was enticing.

An amuse bouche of duck sausage was a nice start albeit a little gamey but it was robust tasting and not too fatty.

The grilled porcini with pheasant egg, crisp parmesan and arugula was my winner for the night. The combination of the various flavours and textures were very well balanced and went very well with the 2003 Moraga red I was lucky enough to get from the proprietor at a Bel-air do honouring him over the weekend. Good on you Mr. Thomas Victor Jones - we are glad that you went from B2-s to wine and brilliantly too. Your card was apt - and I thoroughly enjoyed the samples from your second career.

The grilled shrimp was light yet tasty - succulently done reminiscent of good Chinese restaurants, accompanied by crunchy cauliflower and a piquant sauce with citrus hints. Looks did it no justice.

The roast lamb served on a bed of peppercorns was the juiciest and tenderest I've had in a while. Well marbled but with a meaty bite to it, there was also no lambey smell so even the faintest of hearts can try this. Well, I highly recommend it. I didn't see it on the regular menu but if you see it on the daily-changing tasting menu, be sure to jump on it.

Dessert was a fruit tart using nectarines but while I loved the pastry and baked custard, the fruit was just a tad too tart (pardon the pun).

A great experience I would gladly have next time I'm in LA. Kudos to a great service team who made our evening even more enjoyable. Thanks!
