Singapore - Gourmet Plus

Sometimes, all you want after a brutal long week of traveling is to eat somewhere comfortably casual, in the neighbourhood, and a big bonus, broadcasting a Federer match live!  The latter was a huge bonus, but this is definitely a casual neighbourhood joint with a very decent menu to speak of so you shouldn't tire of coming here if bistro fare is your thing.  Service was crisp, knowledgeable and un-intrusive.  My only complaint was that it was little too dark to be romantic since I do like to check out what I'm eating..  but to each her own.  Because of the dim lighting, photo quality suffered (small price to pay).

We started with fresh oysters, served with lemon wedges and a bottle of Tabasco on the side.  Fresh they were, and although not introduced to us, likely to be of French import, given the salinity, minerality yet sweet finish.  Very enjoyable especially with the condiments.

Of course, since Feds was playing, ordering the Raclette in his honour was a given.  And we were pleased with it.  Although I couldn't be sure that it was true Raclette cheese (it had the texture but wasn't pungent enough for me), the offering was authentic with air dried beef, baby spuds, gherkins and pickled pearl onions.  Yummy if you order a bubbly or crisp white to go with.

Presentation of the Caesar Salad was impressive.  With the 4 towering leaves of Romaine encasing chopped up lettuce, with shaved Parmeggiano, Baco bits, croutons and a hard boiled egg.   Traditional enough although we've been spoilt so I would have preferred a 63 degree egg.  Although lettuce was crisp and fresh, the same could not be said of the Baco bits, which were just a tad "off".  While not quite yet rancid, but it was almost there, and the croutons might have followed suit.  Dressing was a little garlicky and I would have preferred the presence of a little more anchovies over the garlic.

Our main of the special squid ink pasta with seafood was definitely straight from the sea. We ordered capellini which absolutely soaked up the excellent seafood and very lightly tomato base sauce, while co-mingling with the squid ink to lend a d rustic sea smell and taste to the whole dish.  Very enjoyable, even if it could have been salted a little more.

To end, we were strongly recommended to take the last portion of the night of the dessert du jour.  We did not regret it as the French pear was well poached in the red wine it was soaked in, and given a creamy finish with high quality vanilla ice cream and given textural finish by the almonds (which I didn't care for as much since they weren't roasted enough to release any almond fragrance).  But the pear, wine and ice cream were an excellent combination, which even if you had a full dinner, you would still manage to finish comfortably and happily since it was so good and light.

Overall, an enjoyable place to dine at if you want fuss free, dress down, bistro fare in an old residential neighbourhood.  Added bonus, Federer won in straights, avenging his last loss to the Djoker.

Hong Kong - Gusto

If you have some time, and I mean soooome time, a visit to Gusto can be a happy thing.  The food is very decent for a neighborhood kinda place but you have to be prepared to wait for it.  We couldn't tell from where we were seated but I think there is only one person doing prep and cooking for the whole joint.  Granted, it's not a big place but it's a lot to do if the whole house wants to eat.  Thankfully we were there on a slow week night.

I ordered a drink of the day - a grape-juice based slushee which was a great appetite opener.  The grape juice was fresh and sweet, and naturally so.  With the crushed ice which splurged up the juice, the 2 were joined at the hip and at one with each other.

Even the bread took a long time coming but it was very good bread, with enough sourdough to make it chewier than it looked.  And a quality cube of butter was all we needed to ease our rumbling tum tummy.

Our appetizer of the Macaroni 'N 3 Cheese Gratin finally came after about 20 minutes.  The baked macaroni with smoked mozzarella, fontina and cheddar cheese, infused with white truffle oil was simple but well executed.  Macaroni was al dente and the 3 cheeses combined well so that they blended rather than have each fighting for attention.  And of course, the white truffle oil brought highlights to each mouthful rather than overwhelm the little cup size dish.

Next up, our Cobb Salad with with chicken, romaine, bacon, hard boiled eggs, avocado and tomatoes served with ranch dressing was despite the abundance of protein, light and extremely tasty.  Well dressed with enough dressing to taste but not drenched, this can be a very well balanced meal on its own too.

The finale of the Gusto burger - hand ground angus sirloin with bacon, mushrooms, caramelized onions, topped with fontina and cheddar cheese on a toasted sesame bun was my least favorite.  While tasty, it wasn't my idea of a burger since the patty was just a tad soft ie. overly ground.  I usually like a little more bite in the patty so I thought it was a bit of waste of a good piece of ground meat.  But I have to say that the condiments lifted the burger and still managed to make it yummy.  Good but not great.

Since service was slow, I didn't want to risk being late for a conference call and so left without having dessert.  Maybe next time.  When I actually do have a lot more time to get into the whole lazy atmosphere.  It would then be nice to savor and try the other dishes on a very small but promising menu of home-style hearty favorites.

Hong Kong - Cafe Deco

For the tourist, The Peak is still a fascinating place to visit.  It is the territory's perfect vantage point for views of the magnificent skyline, possibly unrivaled in the world, on a clear day that is.  For B who hadn't visited HK in a while, it was in his mind, a pretty good way to spend a lazy afternoon.  It wasn't picture perfect since it was pretty muggy when we got there but still good enough to make things out to a reasonable distance.   I still prefer it in the evenings when the lights come on.

We ended up at Cafe Deco for a very late lunch and after ordering 2 summer coolers to quench our walk up, from the car park that is, we got to ordering an Indian-themed meal.  We started with the Spinach Chana Masala - chick peas, mushrooms and spinach leaves cooked in a mild masala sauce.  We couldn't make out the mushrooms and spinach and the sauce had way too much fresh ginger over the top to take away from the masala.  So this was a Hong Kong version of the real thing but still acceptably tasty.

The accompanying Naan Bread, which came with yogurt, was a huge disappointment.  Overly chewy to a point of discomfort, not light and fluffy as it should be, and not at all fragrant from the tandoor, this was only eaten since there wasn't much of a choice to eat the masala with, apart from rice.

The show stealer was the Tandoori Selection - a mixed hotplate of chicken, ostrich fillet, lamb shoulder and Himalayan chicken, well marinated in spices and cooked to perfection in a Tandoor oven, to retain the juices of the various cuts of meat.  We thought it might be a bit much for 2 over a light meal but we had no problems finishing it at all.  The bed of onions, lettuce and other veggies protected the meats from the hot plate also, and while keeping the meats warm, did not burn or cook them further at the table.  Although not authentic as you would get at an Indian restaurant, this is a dish that can command the fans on its own, and precisely why the Cafe Deco group has won fans over.

While I did not leave a fan of the restaurant, it would still make the list of places to dine at on The Peak.  It's full length glass windows with views of the city are distracting enough to take your attention away from the glitches in the food.

If you don't get lucky with your camera because of the weather, you can pick up an artist's rendition along the foot paths downstairs from a street peddler.

Hong Kong - Tung Po 東寶小館

Dai Pai Dongs (大排檔)- a large part of Hong Kong's heritage, now sanitized into mostly municipal services buildings by the government.  Ok, not so sanitized, considering greasy floors and who knows what happens in the deep throes of the kitchen.  There's been hype about Tung Po and it was sheer luck that we got 6 people available together to try it on a Sunday night.  Like the experienced ones tell us, reserve the chicken and the lotus leaf rice.  Ok, all set.

We sat down amidst the hustle and bustle and with the boom box blasting.  Ok, adds to the atmosphere.  Just don't expect to do any thinking around here.  Can't even hear yourself speak.  Soup of the day kicked us off although it was rather blah.  Tasted a little like they ran out of soup and added water to make up the volumes at end of day.  Next..

The advantage of reserving food ahead is that you get it really quickly.  The roast chicken (南乳風沙雞) was well executed - very crispy skin barely hanging on to the juicy flesh and topped with crispy garlic bits.  Great start especially since there was beer and coke on the table.

Similarly, the deep fried pig trotters were excellent.  Thank goodness some of us are pretty health conscious otherwise there would not be enough to go round.

There's been much talk about this dish.  Very similar to Italian style squid ink spaghetti, this was Tung Po's interpretation of squid ink spaghetti but with squid colloid balls.  A+ for innovation although it wasn't as good as I thought.  Overall, it was pretty bland so save for getting black teeth and lips after eating this, there wasn't much else to speak of.  The balls were better and had traces of squid bits in them but I probably won't order this again unless someone demanded it.

The flower crab steamed in egg white and chinese wine was light but tasty.  Not as good as 三姐, but still very decent and worth the order.  Flower crabs tend to be sweeter but light on the meat available to eat.  If you like something more hearty, substitute for the meat crab (肉蟹).

This was easily my favorite of the evening.  A simple oyster omelette but oh so yummy.  The eggs were very fragrant and fried to a perfect golden brown.  Complemented by the very meaty oysters as opposed to a more muscular textured version, these oysters offered up more of the oyster taste akin to dried oysters ( 壕豉)as you bite into them and start savoring them on your palate.

As we neared the end, we expected our duck-sauced lotus leaf rice (鴨汁荷葉飯)to show up but amidst the lengthy commotion, we learnt that it had been given to someone else!  In ordinary cases, one would get most upset to lose the opportunity of trying the house special, but here comes Robby - probably the owner/manager or in Chinese triad terms, the one who speaks (話事人).  His flamboyance distracted us and hoodwinked us into giving him 2 beers from our table, and agreeing to the substitute of the fried noodles (豉油皇炒麵).  The noodles turned out to be my 2nd favorite of the night, fried so well to leave little trace of grease on the plate.  The crunch from the bean sprouts and the fragrance from the toasted sesame seeds completed the delectability of this very quintessential Hong Kong staple.

To end, everyone enjoys the house dessert of Chinese herbal jelly in a ginger-based syrup(薑汁涼粉).  Refreshing especially in the summer, this is a great way to cool down the system before braving the summer humidity.

Overall, an enjoyable experience.  Some dishes obviously better than others but worth at least one try.  Might be one of the better Dai Pai Dongs left on the HK island side, I'm told.

Washington DC - Good Stuff Eatery

The concept is wonderful - kinda like Jamie Oliver meets Modern Italian but here it's Spike meets old-fashioned American favourites of burgers, fries and shakes.  My reaction on visiting is that if I had a restaurant with such steady crowds, I am set.  The people relate.  So I am just hoping the nits with service and quality control get sorted out over time.

It's not a fast food joint - not at these prices.  So IMHO, it needs to offer up something a little more than nostalgia.

My hand-spun Soursop Hop and Strawberry Shake was refreshing.  Good quality fruit and ice cream hand-spun to deliver a home style consistency that's thick enough and importantly, to still be able to discern the strawberries.  The soursop was MIA so a little disappointment there.

My Uncle D's chili 'n cheddar burger did not look like much when I opened the wrapper.  Everything sort of mashed together.  While I still like to eat with cutlery, I didn't have much of choice here.  Very hard to pick up for those who still like eating their burgers the traditional way - with their hands.  The taste was admittedly pretty good.  It was a good juicy patty, and well spiced chili.  The combination of the green onions and sour cream sealed it for me.  Taste - 8; preso - ZERO.

Sides sounded wonderful from the menu.  Spike's village fries with thyme, rosemary and cracked pepper.  Stupendous combination but poorly executed.  Fries were soggy, and whoever had the bag of spices did not have control.  Way too much spice, which became soggy also.  Such a letdown.

Cliff's homegrown Vidalia onion petals were slightly better.  Tasty and sweet onion petals but oh my, coated in mile high batter.  Way too much of it.  The soggy factor was smaller but dig right to the bottom, and there was a small pile of soggy handcut fries there.  What's up with that?

Chef Spike has got a great concept and great place to hang.  But he definitely needs to hire better people and train them better to deliver the good stuff in an eatery everyone can rave about.  I like it enough to give it a second try and hope it is GOOD STUFF next time.

Los Angeles - Second City Bistro

Chill place to hang.   It is after all, a bistro.  And its cozy interiors, with open kitchen and brick walls, with booth seating is exactly as it should be although on a Tuesday night, it is quiet and not quite so cool..  Perhaps it was a little too early.

The food is as the website introduces, American fare with flair.  And the menu promises that, and then some.

Execution was a little flat though.  The French onion soup certainly did not have a soup stock base which boasted the workings of a brew but rather a short cut of sorts.  2 tads saltier than it should be did not help either.  But if you like your salt, it is tasty for that reason alone.

My half burger as I shared with KS was better though.  Chargrilled beef patty, albeit a little overdone, with caramelised onions, crispy bacon with lettuce and tomato was tasty enough although as burgers go, this won't make it to any top 10 category.

Perhaps BK's choice of the salads with char-grilled beef was the better way to go.  If I'm in El Segundo, I might give it another go, but it won't be a place I purposely drive out to though.

Beijing - Cafe Europa

According to DL, this is the story of a Chinese boy who grew up in Austria, then goes back to his roots and brings Austrian cuisine with him.  And it is pretty good food, I must say.  Not too adulterated on account of the location but rather home-style comfort food in an extremely casual setting.  We were there in the evening, and there isn't much to look out of the full-glass walls of but in the day-time and on a sunny day, I can imagine it can be pretty nice to wile away a long lunch.

My main of Angler fish grilled in bacon, set on a bed of mash, served with sun-dried tomatoes, was very tasty.  The bouncy-textured fish, flavoured by the smoky bacon and tomatoes, then kindly neutralised by the creamy mash was an exciting burst of flavours and textures.  And just what I needed after a plane ride - not too heavy nor greasy.

Especially since I can finish comfortably with dessert, a lovely pear tart.  Perfectly baked pears, with a hint of juicy crunch on a hard crust.  Although cold from sitting out - it was surprisingly still cold in Beijing this time of year - it was still very good and a nice finish to a long day.

Worth a visit if you're ever in the vicinity.

Beijing - Park Hyatt

What's better than 2 nights in Beijing?

2 nights in Beijing at the spanking new Park Hyatt.  So new even cabbies don't know it.  It's not quite Park Hyatt Tokyo in service or Park Hyatt Chicago in coolness, but it is a Park anyhow, and whatever they lack in service, slight maintenance issues is made up for in a decent location, ergonomic design and crazy views from the top (or anywhere within the hotel).

Here's mine from Room 3904, where you can see the traffic on Chang An Avenue on a clear day.

Wake up to the smell of gourmet coffee with the Nespresso machine in your room - they even have 3 flavours for you to choose from, and you can go on caffeine extreme if you consume all 6 capsules they give you daily.  No need to even add water (they do it for you).  Just insert capsule and press the button - just don't forget to receive coffee with your cup!

F&B in the hotel is very commendable also.  The China Bar is a loungy place to enjoy some "cool factor" down time over drinks and soak in the bright night views of the city.

With limited time, I ate twice at the Lounge, which is part of the lobby on the 63rd.  The description says it all - it is comfort food, both Asian and Western styles.  The spicy beef noodles was brilliant, and can match the one at the Cafe of the Grand Hyatt down the road, and the pot stickers are the healthiest and you can actually see the pork and prawn divide in the fillings.  And you can wash all of these down with their variety of health shakes and smoothies.

Great place to stay and it could well be my regular provided the "corporate rate" is available!

Singapore - Oomphatico's

I hardly get to this part of Singapore.  If I do, the default place to meet seems to be the Dempsey area, which really for all the hype, you have to admit, is overrated for the food.  But Tanglin mall is so hmm...  domestic and unhappening.  True but if you want a spot of quiet, this isn't bad.

So when BL suggested Oomphatico's, I had to check it out first.  I don't come back to Singapore that often and every meal counts.  The menu looked promising...  very much like when you're in the US, and this is quite like a lot of the new bistros sprouting over with a bit of everything.  Staples are usually safe.  We sat down to order our fancy juice combis and waited....

As we waited and waited.. the Parma Ham with Prosciutto and Rocket thin crust pizza arrived.  Very nicely done.  Crisp and slightly chewy dough for bite, the tomato based tasted slightly spiked but in an interesting way..  But we were distracted by our lack of fluids to investigate..  Both hams were of decent quality and not overly salted and of course, well balanced by the slightly spicy and fresh rocket.  Still waiting..

Thankfully, our juices arrived before our Oomphatico's club sandwich did. We were quite parched already especially since we spiked our pizzas with chilli flakes and a touch of Tabasco. I downed my Oomphatuation of apple, pomegranate and grape and finished more than half of it at one go.

The club was presented skewered on a stick - interesting but not enough to take us away from our pizza.  It looked a little dry but when we finally sank into it, were pleasantly surprised.  The bread was fresh and crusty on the outside but a nice chewy testure of the inside and smeared with a thin layer of butter.  Eggs and bacon are always winners with me.  The only thing we didn't like was chicken breast chunks.  I like dark meat although the saving grace was that it wasn't too dry for breast.  Still took me a while to chew through.  By the way, you can hold the sandwich and eat through the layers so we deconstructed it ourselves and sawed our way through with fork and knife.

To finish, we decided to abstain from sugar and went for coffee instead.  My Ristretto was not wow but nicely done and had no bad aftertaste - with a little hot milk, I was a happy camper.  Ready for my night of the invading conference calls.  :(

PS.  bear with the service.  Friendly enough and apologetic enough but needs lots of work and because there is an outdoor and indoor area, there aren't enough pairs of eyes manning the entire area and it can work you into a frenzy if you need something in a hurry.

Los Angeles - Tin Roof Bistro

Manhattan Beach is a cool place to hang in LA.  Tin Roof Bistro is a cute place in the area, drawing its decor from the Northern Californian region, with a huge emphasis on wine country.

Old crates are used to make the tables, used wine bottles now used for serving water to diners, and they even have a mini vineyard where they're trying to grow grapes at the entrance.  Unfortunately, I didn't see any though.

I went for lunch where they have a typical American cafe menu but spruced up to have modern influences from other lands, with tuna spring rolls and tapas goat and honey.

We were in a hurry so I chose the Pizza Bianca with Prosciutto, without the garlic.  But the rest of the mozarella, fontina, parmesan and balsamic were a nice combination against the salty prosciutto.  My only complaint was that the pizza base was a little greasy and burnt but if you like it rustic, you would be happy.

The dinner menu is a lot more bistro like with classics like Steak Frites and sounds enticing enough for a second visit.  Perhaps on my next visit in June..

Singapore - The Marmalade Pantry

I was never impressed when they were at Palais Renaissance.  Competent but not wow!  And certainly not at those prices for what I consider to be fairly ordinary deli/cafe food.  I've always had a weakness for their nutella cupcake though...  Also, it is a nice and comfy place to wile away over a leisurely lunch.  So OK, ION is a new outlet so why not give it a shot.  I think it is for lack of competition that they still do well.  PS Cafe's new outlet at Palais gives them a run for their money but face it, it is still a pretty choiceless market in this space so it looks to continue to do well - at least it was a very decent crowd at lunch today.

I was happy with my order of the Capellini with Sakura Ebi and White Radish.  Al dente pasta well coated with the garlic infused olive oil, tossed with Japanese dried shrimps.  A tasty combination although there was a tad too much oil so the bottom was not well coated but there was a shallow pool of oil, so I left the last bit untouched.  I liked the addition of the crunchy white radish which was sweet and added another dimension to the dish.  I would give this high marks for creating the combination but discount it just a little on execution.

The Pantry Club sandwich was my second choice so I was happy that someone else ordered it so I pinched a deck.  The ham and egg section was yummy - especially since they used a fluffy omelette, but the chicken section was a let down since the mayo was too sweet for me.  Of course, this went well with the separate order of fries, which was pretty decent (although the garlic aioli fries at PS Cafe wins hands down).

Other staples like the Crab Caesar and Crab Linguini are still popular choices, which M and C still dig.  But I'm a little over them to be honest.

The Sticky Date and Toffee Pudding never disappoints if you like your puddings.  Of course it's going to be sweet - it is dessert!  But if you order an espresso, you're all set.

The Old Fashioned Chocolate Fudge Cake was decent enough but with slow service, and coupled with just being a tad too dry, was not inviting enough to be finished and we left a fair bit of it untouched.

All in all, a nice place to chat over a competent meal but don't be expecting the moon here.

Hong Kong - Misocool

The new mall K11 in TST opened to mixed reviews..   checked it out since I was in the neighbourhood.  Not entirely captivating retail, but I did go try Misocool's (Emperor Group's latest F&B offering) newest outlet in the basement.  Stick to the kitchen specials and you'll be ok.

Their cold ramen is well tossed and therefore appropriately coated with a pleasant sesame-based dressing and topped off with crunch shrimps and a variety of vegetables.  Perfect as the weather turns warmer.

Wash down with their Kyoho Grape Icey and it's a pretty satisfying lunch!

Their other special of the miso ramen with barbequed pork was decent but between the 2, the cold ramen won.  Might not change my mind even if we get into a cold front..

Hong Kong - BLT Burger

No, not bacon lettuce and tomato, although that is on offer.  BLT is Bistro Laurent Tourendel, named for the acclaimed chef and this is his interpretation of a classic American burger joint.  The menu is a fun combination of burgers, milkshakes (spiked and non), salads, and for the non-beef eater, they have chicken, salmon and even a veggie falafel on offer.  Big plus?  A&W root beers!  Bet you haven't had those in a while..

I am boring - I only do burgers at burger joints.  On my first visit, I had the classic, which was certainly promising enough for me to come again.  The burgers are made from a variety of cuts from the cow to deliver a juicy, beefy, yet relatively easy for the lazy to chew on.

Today, I had the Tex Mex.  It is a messy burger to hold in your hands - so stick to the cutlery on offer.  Slathered with chili, jalapenos and melted Montery Jack, it was like having 2 meals.  For those who don't like spice, this is not for you.  But otherwise, it is a fun burger to eat.  The spice and little bit of heat adds to the appetite and so I realise I was fooled, but only after I finished everything.  Oh well, extra hour on the tennis court tomorrow.

And to top it off, wash down with a strawberry milk shake.  This has got to be one of the better ones around.  Full of fresh strawberries, it tasted slightly like a healthy smoothie, but don't be fooled, this is the real McCoy.

My only disappointment were the fat fries.  They were too fat, so weren't tasty enough since there wasn't enough of a crisp skin to go round.  Maybe try the skinny next time, I am not one for waffle fries either.  But you know there's a next time!  Till I get my next burger craving...

Singapore - Jones the Grocer

Dempsey Hill is a great locale to hang out but it hasn't been at the top of my dining experiences in Singapore.  But when you're in an easy mood, it's easy to give it a second shot.  Especially during the festive season, and you prefer to be far from the madding crowd, easy parking becomes an easy option.

Today, M and I went to Jones the Grocer, actually reluctantly given our previous visit when it first opened.  We sat down and pored through a limited lunch menu, and 2 pairs of eyes zoomed in more than quickly on the Wagyu burger.  M is very persuasive and so I threw my "no more meat before the year is up" notion out of the window.

OK, no regrets.  It's by no means the best I've had, but it was very enjoyable.  Especially when I've been poked and prodded for about 3 hours while having fasted from 9pm last night, the burger was just what I needed, washed down with my long black.

Although a Wagyu burger, it wasn't such that the marbling took over.  It was actually very lean for Wagyu, giving the burger enough of a meaty bite, which I like in my burgers.  Open face makes a lot of sense if you don't want too much carb, and laden generously with a beefy tomato and lots of rocket, with caramelised onions to lend a sweet finish with the aged balsamic, a full finish without feeling the after effects.

Very nice...
